How Amazon rainforest fire (an environmental catastrophe) causes climate change ?

elonjeevan
After the fire in the forests of Amazon, the issue of climate change and environmental protection has once again come to dominate the whole world.

The forest of Amazon, which is known worldwide as the Heart of Oxygen, is now in the grip of pollution itself.

Due to The lack of media coverage over Amazon fire many people still are unaware about the massive fire in Amazon Rain forest. You will be surprised to know that this year more than 72000 fire incidents have come to light in this forest.

it is very important to know about it from the perspective of environment.

Because Approximately 20 percent of the world's oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rain forest. That is why it is called as the "lungs of the planet".

If you do not know about world's largest ecosystem no need to worry. here we will discuss in detail about Amazon forest.

Let's start ............

The Amazon rain forest is the world’s largest tropical rain forest (approximately 2 times greater than all over world's all forests), famous for it's massive biodiversity of animals, plants, rivers and insects etc. It is Intercrossed by thousands of rivers, including world's largest river "The Amazon River" (by quantity of water) and in it is world's second largest river after Nile river.

2. where is amazon rain forest located?

Amazon Rain Forest is Located in South America continent.

Green shade shows that Amazon forest is located in nine countries

percentage wise located in following countries

1. Brazil - Majority of the forest is in Brazil i.e 60%.
2. Peru -  13%
3. Colombia - 10%

Other minor amounts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

3. Total Area of amazon forest.

Total Area of this forest is  5,500,000 square km (2,100,000 sq mi) area of dense tropical forest, this is the largest rain forest in the world. that mean If Amazon  were a country, it would be the ninth largest country in the world. The rain forest is so big that it comprises more than half of the world’s remaining rain forests even thought it covers only 6 percent of the earth’s surface.

4. How much oxygen does the Amazon produce?

Nearly  20% of the world;s oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rain forest. because More than half of the world's estimated 10 million species of plants(39000 crores) , animals(17000 species) and insects live in the tropical rain forests. One-fifth of the world's fresh water is in Amazon Basin. and we know that Tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton produce maximum amount of oxygen in earth's atmosphere.

5. Why is the Amazon rain forest so important?

Amazon Rain forests is often called "the lungs of the planet" for their role in absorbing CO2 (2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide),  greenhouse gas (that contributes to global warming), and producing oxygen(20%), upon which all living organs depend for survival.

Must Read - What are Greenhouse Gases ?

it helps to control the earth's climate change and slow global warming by fixing carbon dioxide over emission and also  helps maintain the water cycle by producing large quantities of rainfall (between 1,500 mm and 3,000 mm) every year.

6. So Question is that, what is the problem here?

There is a fire in the Amazon rain forest.  It is a matter of concern that this fire is spreading very fast.  And has been continuously engaged for the last three weeks.  By the way, there is a fire in the forests not only by natural reasons.  Sometimes due to the negligence and deliberate actions of humans.

This fire of Amazon is said to be mixed.  Meaning, some part of this fierce fire is due to natural reasons.  The rest is mostly due to humans.  According to reports, this time, there were more than 72,000 different fires in Brazil.
The National Institute for Space Research says its satellite data shows an average 85 percent increase on the same period in 2018.

7. Causes of Massive Amazon Forest Fire

Fire incidents are common in Brazilian forests in the dry season between July and October.  There is a fire here due to natural reasons. But Experts claim that the incidence of fire is increasing due to deforestation in Brazil.  A few days ago some cities were covered by black deep smoke, which caused the problem of tremendous air pollution and everything became foggy.  Environmental activists blame Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for the current situation.  He says that Brazilian presidents appease people in timber smugglers and illegal mining, adding to the plight of the forests.

 Country wise fire incidents:-

 Brazil-- 75,000

 Venezuela 26,500

 Bolivia- 17,200

 Colombia -14,200

 Peru- 5,680

 Guyana- 890

 Ecuador- 290

 French Guiana- 11

8. What is the connection of Amazon Fire with climate change?

Greenpeace said forest's fire and climate change operate in a vicious circle. As the number of fires increase, greenhouse gas emissions do too. This makes the planet's overall temperature rise, the organization said. As the temperature increases, extreme weather events like major Flooding and droughts happen more often.

"In addition to increasing emissions, deforestation contributes directly to a change in rainfall patterns in the affected region, extending the length of the dry season, further affecting forests, biodiversity, agriculture and human health," Greenpeace said in the release.

Final Thoughts

Natural resources present on the earth are getting depleted day by day.  This is a danger bell for the future.  If strict steps are not taken to save  these natural resources, otherwise in the coming few years, the results will be terrible.

it's very sad that At a time when the world needs billions more trees to absorb the carbon  that we continue to emit on a daily basis, but our planet is losing its biggest rain forest.

How climate change is increased the risk of flooding ?

elonjeevan
In areas where there was havoc of drought till a few weeks ago, there is now a havoc of floods. Then, we were looking at drought in the context of climate change. Now the flood is in terrible havoc, now we are watching the flood from the point of view of climate change. Due to floods on the land, there are policies made by humans, which is called "Man Made Crisis". Unfair use of natural resources increases the causes of climate change.

Presently, the rapid erosion of the natural resources of our biosphere has led to serious changes in the global climate here, which have serious effects on the human and other animal species.  Due to not being able to adapt this climate changes, dinosaurs and other organisms have not been able to save their existence.  Climate change is due to natural, mechanical and anthropological processes like greenhouse gases for example carbon dioxide, methane etc., is called climate change.  These gases accumulate in the atmosphere and raise the temperature and this changes the climate.

Must Read- What are Greenhouse Gases and how effect environment ?

Climate change, global temperature rise, rise in sea level, change in crop cycle, etc. Apart from this climate changes are not only for our children but also for our children and their children's children, there are great calamities for landslides, tsunamis, epidemics, migration and health.

This year there has been a lot of disaster in many states of the country. These states look like a disaster area because floods have sank many villages. Roads have been broken, crops have been damaged, rail services have been shut down, airports have been closed and the economy has collapsed.

Floods have killed more than 370 people so far, leaving more than 1 million homeless.

The devastation of the flood is called the will of God, but the harm it causes is certainly man made and the fault of the human being. It's called the "Man Made Disaster."

Climate change Causes Cloudburst

If we look closely at the problem of the last few years in India, the effect of climate change is visible directly. Like the city of Leh was devastated by a cloudburst in August 2010. in September 2014, Jammu and Kashmir suffered the worst of 60 years of severe floods, affecting six lakh people and killing more than 200 people.

Recently, in August 2019,due to cloudburst in Uttrakhand and heavy rain in northern states death toll reaches to 37.

Floods in Punjab, India

It is no secret that India is an agricultural country. And Most of India's agriculture is dependent on the monsoon.Two-thirds of the country's population is dependent on agriculture and it is certain that to provide the availability of food grains, to everyone has negative impact it will affect the entire human race.

Impact of climate change in India:-

Climate change has a negative impact on humans.  After the 19th century, the overall temperature of the Indian land has increased from 0.5° to 1°.  This increase in temperature may seem only minor on a large scale, but it may later take the basis of the great disaster.

Farming / Agriculture:- Due to increasing population, demand for food is increasing day by day. Which is increasing pressure on natural resources.

Agriculture Rich India
Agriculture Rich India

Climate change is having a direct impact on Indian agriculture.  Because there is a change in temperature, rainfall, humidity etc., which is affecting the capacity of the soil and it is causing virus-causing organisms and diseases, which is slowly eroding the fertility of the soil.

Must Read- What are the Causes of Climate Change ?

weather:-

The cycle of rainfall is affected when the weather is warm.  Due to this there is an increased risk of floods or drought, recently there has been severe floods in Maharashtra, karnataka, Assam, Kerala, Himachal pradesh, punjab etc.. Clouds are bursting in northern India. Which is clearly the effect of climate change.

Increase in sea level:- Another major factor of climate change is the rise in sea level.  With the warming of the sea, melting of ice, it is estimated that the water level of the inter seas will increase by 1/2 meter in the coming century.  Many ill effects will emerge from this.  Such as wastage of coastal areas, floods, soil erosion, rise of salt water, etc., the coastal life of southern part of India will be disturbed and farming, drinking water, fisheries and human settlement will be destroyed here.

Must Read - Ways to Reduce Climate Change

Conclusion-

The government must take the necessary steps to deal with the rising floods and develop a better flood alert system. Climate change should be taken into account, maximizing trees, not tampering with rivers.

The forest area should be expanded as the forest absorbs more water.

We all need to think seriously about this issue as the situation is getting complicated due to climate change, in places where there was not much rainfall before, now there are floods and some areas are facing drought.

After the floods a question arises: Is human being responsible for these conditions or the nature ????

ways to reduce climate change

elonjeevan
Climate change is the most essential issue of our generation; we are the first to witness its early signs and the last who have a chance of stopping them from happening.
Living in a bubble of denial can only get us this far; the planet which is our home is already a scene for melting glaciers, raising floods, extinction of species… the list goes on and on.

Tackling climate change is a shared mission for mankind.  Let's join hands to combat with climate change. Because as individuals we can slow down climate change effect by implementing small more sustainable actions within our community.

Before Knowing about how to fight with climate change everyone should have complete Knowledge about climate change , its causes, and facts.

what is Climate Change (Definition, Causes,Effects,Actions and solutions )

Let us tell you about daily habits that can be adopted to fight with climate change locally.

Major Ways to Fight with Climate change In Your Home

1.  Put the 3 R's of sustainability into Daily practice

The goal of the 3R's is to prevent waste and conserve natural resources. which helps to reduce climate change effect.

  • - Reduce: consume less, more efficiently.
  • - Reuse: Try to use the old stuff as much as possible. Take the advantage of second-hand markets to sell your old things and to buy second hand things. You'll be saving money and reducing your consumption.
  • - Recycle - if you are really concerned about Environment then keep one thing in Mind that Don't through anything away that can be recycled. Recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy consumption.

Recycling eliminates the need for new raw materials to make new products. For Example, By recycling one ton of paper saves 19 trees from being cut. Tree preservation in turn leads to the protection of water catchment areas and promotes the capture of CO2, reducing greenhouse gas emission.

Studies indicate that deforestation and landfills account for an estimated 25% of the global greenhouse gas emissions annually.

2. Reduce Greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emission is a major cause of climate change.  we have to avoid those things which increase emissions. such as, Fossil Fuel, Coal and  Natural gas used for electricity, Heat and Transportation...

  •  Start walking - Is there any single Sustainable action that’s better for your mind, your body, and your planet?
  • Bicycling-  use cycle for short distance it keeps us fit and healthy. use less car as much as possible.
  • Carpooling - use carpooling for same destination. Enjoy that time with your friends it's really wonderful.
  • Use public Transport- For Long Distance travel Buses and Trains are best alternative of cars. According to the Study, each liter of fuel that your car uses, equals 2.5 kilos of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.
  •  Add solar panels to your house- within reasonable price you can install solar panels in your house. How to Add Solar Power to a Home??  renewable energy ministry provide many subsidies on solar panel.

3. Save energy in your Home appliances

Saving energy is not only good for the fight against climate change, it's also good for your wallet.

  • Replace Your Bulbs with LEDs- Traditional  light bulbs consume an excessive amount of electricity and must be replaced them with energy efficient alternatives.compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs) consume 25-80% less electricity and last three to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs.

  •   Install a programmable or smart thermostat- Always adjust the thermostat for heating and air conditioning.
  •  Purchase energy efficient appliances- Before purchasing an appliance, you must pay attention to the initial purchase price and the annual operating cost.
    Use always energy star appliances
    Use always energy star appliances
  • Although energy efficient appliances usually have higher purchase prices, their operating costs are 9-25% lower than conventional models. You should look on the ENERGY STAR level of appliances. For Example-  ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers consume 25% less energy and 45% less water than others.
  •  Clean or replace HVAC filters time to time - A dirty filter on your air conditioner or heater will make the system work harder and waste energy.
  • Hang-dry your clothes instead of using the dryer- Almost 80-90 percent people use dryer to dry clothes. Do you Know how much electricity does a dryer consume?

4.  Raise voice against Deforestation

Buy Eco- Friendly Furniture - Deforestation is a serious problem, so we all have to buy sustainable furniture. using Eco- Friendly Furniture is not only saving environment but also save money. Here are some Places to Find Sustainable Furniture.

buy sustainable furniture to stop deforestation

Plant more trees - On average, 1 acre of new forest can sequester about 2.5 tons of carbon annually. Young trees absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 13 pounds/tree each year. when Trees reach their most productive stage of carbon storage at about 10 years  they are estimated to absorb 48 pounds of carbon dioxide/year.

5. Eat low carbon footprint diet-

cheese, Meat, and eggs have the highest carbon footprint. Fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts have much lower carbon footprints.

Eat local and seasonal food : Eat those food that is produced in the local area, avoid imports which create more emissions due to transportation. Also, eat seasonal items, to avoid less sustainable production methods.

Avoid excessive packaging and processed foods as much as possible.  here are 10 Processed Foods that you should Avoid

6.  Reduce food waste-

Food waste is an enormous source of greenhouse gases. Recently,The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report ,

IPCC's new report on climate change and land
IPCC's new report on climate change and land

"entitled Climate Change and Land",  notes that roughly 25 to 30% of total food produced annually is lost or wasted — and that has consequences. From 2010 to 2016, global food loss and waste contributed eight to 10 per cent of human-caused GHG emissions. Food waste directly effect climate change

7. Use Reusable Water Bottles-

Landfills already contain more than 2 million tons of plastic bottles. 1.5 million barrels of oil are used to manufacture water bottle every year. single use plastic water bottles take more than 1,000 years to biodegrade. so, reusable water bottle does sound like a good idea.

8. Always Bring your own shopping bags.

Plastic bags are very harmful for the environment: They take hundreds of years to break down, contaminate soil and waterways, and cause widespread marine animal deaths. To fight with this  problem, many country make laws to ban plastic-bags or fees on single-use bags. Switch to reusable bags and use them consistently.
