what is radon gas and where does it come from ?

Radon Gas is one of the major Cause of  Indoor Air pollution.  now question arises  what is Radon and how it is harmful for our health .

What is Radon (where is radon found) ?

Radon is a odorless, colorless radioactive gas.

chemical properties of Radon

  • Element Name:        Radon

  • Radon Symbol:        Rn

  • Atomic Number:      86
  • Element Group:        Group 18 (Noble Gas)
  • Period:                      Period 6
  • Appearance:             Colorless Gas

  • radon atomic mass   222.0 atomic mass units

Radon forms naturally from the decay of radioactive elements ,such as Uranium(found in soil and rock). radon gas from soil move into air and also in underground water.

Radon gas is present both in outdoors and indoors. but normally it can be highly found in houses , underground water such as well water.

How Radon effects our Body ?

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer overall (after smoking) and the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Radioactive Radon breaks into solid radioactive elements called radon progeny.
Examples of Radio progeny

  • polonium-218,
  • polonium-214,
  • lead-214

These Radio progeny can attach to dust and can be breathed into the lungs and causes lung cancer. As radio progeny breaks down into air and emit Radiations that can damage the DNA inside of body's cells.

how radon gets into homes

In our homes Air pressure  is usually lower than the pressure in the soil around our home's foundation. Because of this difference in pressure, our house acts like a vacuum, comes radon in through foundation cracks and other openings. Then, home traps the radon inside, where it can build up.
Radon enters into house through soil, and ground water

What are the symptoms of radon in your home

  1. shortness of breath.
  2. hoarseness (abnormal change in the voice)
  3. chest pain, especially when you cough or laugh.
  4. persistent cough.
  5. coughing up blood.
  6. wheezing.
  7. frequent infections such as  bronchitis*  and pneumonia.

Definition of Bronchitis

Bronchitis is swelling of the bronchial tubes (bronchi), the air passages between the mouth and nose and the lungs.

Radon is mainly found in United States About 1 out of every 15 homes in the United States have a level of radon that is too high. Breathing in radon over time can cause lung cancer,

 Radon  Uses

As we know that Radon gas is a colorless, odorless gas and leading cause of lung cancer but it is used for many purposes.

1. Radon decays into radioactive polonium (radon progeny). and alpha particles. These emitted radiation made radon useful in cancer therapy.
2. Radon is used in some hospitals to treat tumours.

how to detect radon in house

Radon is commonly found in united states. About 1 out of every 15 homes in the United States have a level of radon is too high.If the radon level in your home is high, you can take steps to fix it.

1. Take a  radon kit  and free measure the level of radon in your house .

Testing your home for radon is easy and doesn't cost very much.  There are 2 main types of radon test kits.
  •
  • 1. Short-term tests take between 2 and 90 days.
  • 2. Long-term tests take more than 90 days.
If your home has a radon level of 4 or higher, fix your home.

Conclusion

Radon is leading cause of indoor  air pollutionIndoor air pollution is 3.5 times worse than outdoor air pollution. Take this problem seriously because radon causes lung cancer. And it has also many other severe effects on our Health.

Thanks !!
