World Environment Day 2021

Theme of World Environment Day 2021 is “Ecosystem Restoration”. This Year, world Environment Day would be celebrated on, June 5th, 2021 in Pakistan.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is also known as Environment Day and Eco Day. It is one of the biggest festivals of the year. Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June by people with the aim of keeping the environment clean. World Environment Day appeals to all of us to protect our natural environment.

Main motive to celebrate this day is to raise awareness on emerging Environmental issues, marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, climate change, air pollution etc.

History of world Environment day

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June every year. It was formally designated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on 5 June 1972, the opening day of the 1st World Environment Conference in Stockholm.

The first World Environment Day was held in 1974. Since then, nearly 150 countries have been involved every year, with activities to raise awareness for environmental protection, sustainable development and consumption, fighting global warming, climate action, cleaning up pollution and many other issues.

What is meant by ecosystem restoration?

Ecosystem Restoration is the “process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been destroyed, degraded, and damaged by pollution, global warming and deforestation etc”

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity describes the diversity of life on Earth, including the 8 million species of plants and animals on the planet, their living ecosystems, and their genetic diversity.

Biodiversity is a complex, interdependent web in which each member plays an important role, drawing and contributing in ways that may not even be visible to the naked eye. Much of the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the weather that makes our planet livable all come from nature.

Why is biodiversity important?

Biodiversity is the foundation that supports all life on land and under water. Without nature, life on earth would not be possible.

Biodiversity affects every aspect of human health, including clean air, water, nutritious food, scientific understanding, Sources of medicine, natural disease resistance and climate change. Changing or eliminating an element of this web affects the entire way of life and can have negative consequences on us.

Some Statistics of Air pollution  

  • Air pollution, which kills more than 6 million people every year is the biggest environmental Health risk of our Time. 
  • World Health Organization(WHO) has set standards for air quality, 9 out of every 10 people in the world are forced to face more pollution levels.
  • According to WHO's new report, due to the pollution caused by the smoke of vehicles, 40 lakh children every year - 11,000 cases per day - are becoming victims of asthma.
  • Approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific
  • Air Pollution causes over 2 million deaths due to heart disease every year. It’s a major Environmental risk to health.

Air pollution facts- 

·         92 percent of people worldwide do not breathe in clean air
·         Air pollution costs the global economy $5 trillion every year in welfare costs
·         Ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reduce staple crop yields by 26 percent by 2030
·          Indoor air pollution is 2-5 times worse than outdoors air pollution.
·         By 2050, 6 million people will die per year due to air pollution

Air is an indispensable requirement for living beings on Earth. We can say that the basis of life is the air. But air pollution has become a threat to our lives. So, we have to take this problem seriously. 


Theme of every year of World Environment Day is chosen on those  topics which become a major problem for the entire world. WED is just to remind us that it is our responsibility to save our ecosystem.  Make every day a world environment day by changing your daily habits. Because someone well said, “Little steps bring huge change”
